Just when I thought I was getting ahead!!!
I’ve now been asked to create an ‘iPhonograph’ for an art exhibition called ‘From Waste to Art’. It’s actually a fantastic initiative by Councils across New South Wales (a state of Australia). Run by each Council, members of the public are asked to create pieces of art from waste products. There are a number of categories as well as separate prize categories for young people. I’ll be entering the ‘iPhonograph’ into the Community Function 3D category. With the submission, you need to detail all the inclusions. I’m trying for 100% re-use but let’s see how we go. I’m pretty sure my re-use factor will be well above 70%, in any case.
So…….this is what I have been working on. It has a 50 watt amplifier which I built from a kit (discarded by someone), a 50 watt speaker under the embossed brass horn which can handle a 100 watts of power and to finish this off, I am installing a tone control.
The cradle takes an iPad, iPhone or iPod and charges them at the same time – enjoy! I am changing the black knobs on the front for nice gleaming hand-made brass ones!
Wish me luck as I enter this competition! I’m hoping for some support from my local community and luckily, as so many people are becoming aware of the need to recycle and upcycle items, this is going to be the start of a new era of being more conscious about what we throw away.

I'm proud to say that Michael Greensmith's iPhonographs are going to be on sale at the Victory Antiques Centre in Blackheath from 15 April 2012.
Ask for the Radical Brochante stall at the Victory and be directed upstairs to our store where the iPhonograph will demo on demand!
Michael's also creating a limited run of 11 iPhonographs using an iconic piece of 1930's furniture he's found on his scouting expeditions. I've had a sneak piece and you're going to want to get your hands on one.
